BROTHERS IN ARMS – FLAGSHIP WINES
Brothers in Arms represents the very essence of Langhorne Creek and has evolved from five generations of grape growing traditions. The vines my great great grandfather, William Formby, planted in 1891 led to the estate vineyard known as ‘Metala’.
At Brothers in Arms we are proud of our family heritage and finally decided in 1998 to take the hobby I shared with my brother Tom and late father Stuart to a new level. The first vintage saw only 5 tonnes of Shiraz produced, a volume which has now grown to over 700 tonne per year.
In all 212 hectares are planted to vines with the balance of the 1000 Ha property given over to Merino sheep and cropping. Having owned the property for over 130 years the family has taken the protection and enhancement of the environment as a badge of honour. Wherever possible practices revolve around minimal intervention and finding a balance.
Although our original focus was on Shiraz the wines in our portfolio have evolved over the past decade and we now produce all estate grown Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and blends thereof which showcase Langhorne Creek's ability to offer elegant wines with balance, structure and texture.
For years one of the wine industry’s best kept secrets, Langhorne Creek is now a strong premium wine producer in its own right. This is red wine country.
BROTHERS IN ARMS - SIDE BY SIDE
Side by Side, for six generations, my family have been the custodians of the ‘Metala’ vineyards since our first vine plantings in 1891, which still flourish today beside our more recent plantings. History and innovation working Side by Side to create our entirely estate grown and estate produced wines.
Celebrate the experiences of our past and discover an insight into our exciting future enjoying our Brothers in Arms Side by Side Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
Shiraz - Deep rich red in colour, this Shiraz displays generous regional Langhorne Creek characteristics of red berry fruits, black pepper and cinnamon spiced aromas leading to juicy blackcurrants, earthy touches and fine velvet tannins. Born to age, our wines are made with complexity and texture to mature and best be enjoyed over the next eight to ten years.
Cabernet Sauvignon - Bright crimson and magenta in colour, this Cabernet Sauvignon has classic regional Langhorne Creek aromas of blackcurrants with a herbal Cabernet lift. Touches of mocha, mint leaf and spice lead to mouth filling flavours of blackcurrant and cassis fruits and chocolate. Firm tannins provide a long finish best enjoyed over the next five to ten years.
Malbec - Inky violet in colour, this Malbec is bursting with lifted floral aromas of rose petals and violets. A concentrated palate of Satsuma plums and cassis fruits. Fruit driven yet supported with hints of integrated French oak and plush tannins. Made for food, Malbec calls for strong meats, chargrilled and best enjoyed over the next five to ten years.
BROTHERS IN ARMS - NO 6
Guy Adams and wife Liz have two children, Myles and Emily Adams, who are the sixth generation to live on the Metala property. As the future of family, Brothers in Arms No 6 is a range of contemporary Shiraz driven wines that push the boundary in style and winemaking technique; Bright, impactful and forward thinking.
BROTHERS IN ARMS – FORMBY & ADAMS
My great great grandfather was William Harper Formby, a forward thinking young man who in 1877 renovated Adelaide’s ‘Old’ Queens Theatre as the first under cover horse trading Bazaar. So when in 1891 he planted the first vines on our ‘Metala’ property in Langhorne Creek, he used horse and bullocks, combining hand crafted methods with technology of the day.
Through the generations we have continued with this approach to find a balance between tradition and innovation for sustainable and high quality wine making always reflecting our regional character. As time passed, and through marriage, our family now carries the Adams name so this wine is tribute to being forward thinking while faithful to the past so we may continue for generations to come.
Leading Horse Cabernet Sauvignon - The original teams of heavy working horses would consist of 11, 5 pairs and one leading horse. This horse was the smarter and stronger leader who drove the team forward. So too, our family continues to have Leading Horses in each generation to lead the estate into the future.
Cutting Edge Cabernet Shiraz - Australia is at the forefront of wine growing technology and continues to balance new methods with hand crafted techniques for a sustainable future. Utilising hand pruning and hand picking, with machine advancement, water conservation and faithful regional typicity. Cutting Edge celebrates the old ways and new with this classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
Floodgate Shiraz - Langhorne Creek region was selected for grape growing because of the flooding of the rivers. This natural aspect of the region has made "The Creek" the envy of many, as these vineyards take full advantage of the Bremer and Angus River floods. Nutrient rich river silt washes into the alluvial sandy loam and together with the close proximity of Lake and Maritime breezes, the region has the benefit of cool climate conditions. Our floodgate Shiraz reflects on this importance of water and the uniqueness of our region.
The Well Block Shiraz Cabernet - The classic varieties of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in our estate grown vineyards. In our affectionately named Well Block sit the old well used in times when water was scarce. Set in stone, the well signifies the strength and innovation of caring for our vines and now serves as a reminder of our past.
The Pickers Basket Chardonnay - The fragrant smell of freshly picked berries sampled for the winemaker to begin the harvest starts first with our Chardonnay. This early ripening grape uses the warmth of the day to ripen the fruit while retaining elegant acid levels by the cooling lake breezes and maritime effects. Crunchy flavours, mouth filling and elegant finish.
